Community Resources and Recreation

As a highly developed sector of the Edmonton area, Castle Downs has many amenities dedicated to serving the residents of its various neighbourhoods. These resources include the Castle Downs branch of the Edmonton Public library, the Castle Downs Medicentre which includes an after-hours medical clinic, the local YMCA chapter, the Farmer's Market, Castle Downs Park, Lorelei Park, skateboarding facilities, various shops, a grocery store, and the Castle Downs Recreation Centre which features swim and skate facilities. This area is also home to several playgrounds and outdoor sports facilities, including an outdoor ice rink located in Castle Downs Park.

Local Access and Public Transportation

You can access Castle Downs via 127 Street on the west end, Anthony Henday Drive or Highway 216 on the north end, 97 Street on the east end and 137 Avenue on the south end. As Castle Downs was originally slated to cover only 10 neighbourhoods, these rough boundaries may be subject to change in the future. Rapperswill, for instance, was added as recently as 2010.

This area is serviced by the Edmonton Transit System, which provides an affordable way to get around the community, as well as in and out of Edmonton's core. Acting as a central transit hub for this area is the Castle Downs Transit Centre located on Castle Downs Road near the public library.

Education: Elementary and Secondary Schools

There are several schools that service this area of Edmonton, including both public and Catholic institutions. Located in Baturyn are St. Charles Elementary and Baturyn Elementary. In Caernarvon is Caernarvon Elementary and Katherine Therien Catholic School. Carlisle is home to St. Timothy Catholic Elementary School, while Dunluce is served by Dunluce Elementary and St. Lucy Catholic Elementary School.

Income Demographics and Local Tax Rates

The neighbourhoods of Castle Downs feature an even array of apartments, duplexes and condominiums as well as single detached homes. Almost every neighbourhood, with the exception of newer additions like Rapperswill, has a population of somewhere between 1,000 and 4,500 residents.

Since Castle Downs covers such a large area, almost every income demographic is represented in these neighbourhoods. While more populated areas that favour apartment-style housing include middle class and lower income-earning households, upper-middle class and higher-earning households tend to populate the sparser neighbourhoods.

The Castle Downs Extension Plan, which was introduced in 2005, indicates that Edmonton utility rates (including water, garbage collection, electricity and gas) and property taxes also apply to Castle Downs. In recent years, residents have paid around $4,500 per household per year in total charges including utilities and property taxes.

Annual Events and Festivals

Given the vast population of this section of Edmonton, the Castle Downs Recreation Society plays an active role in putting on events and festivals for its residents. Annual swimming and ice skating events around Castle Downs Park are a favourite among residents. Updates on event listings can usually be found in any of the Castle Downs Recreation Centres where most community events are held. Castle Downs residents also have the luxury of attending events hosted by the City of Edmonton at Churchill Square and Commonwealth Stadium.
