Comprised mostly of young families and professionals, the median age for adults is 25 to 40 years old with the majority of children being 4 and under. While this is a very home grown community with almost 98% of the population being Canadian, many different ethnicities are represented here, the more predominant ones are: Chinese, English, German, American, Scottish, Ukrainian and Italian.
The majority of households are 2 people in size, followed less closely by 3 and 4 person households. In 2001 there were no reported households of 6 or more persons which coincides with the idea that this is a relatively new, small / young family community.
Private Dwellings were not constructed in this community until 1996, at which point, massive construction began to transform Terwillegar Towne into the community it is today. The majority of erected structures are owner occupied single detached homes. Periodically placed throughout are a few duplex/triplex and fourplex with a very small handful of apartments that are less than 5 stories. Almost all units are owner occupied, very few are offered as rental properties. This is by all accounts a very affluent community. In 2001, 34.2% of the households had a combined income of $100,000 and over and by all appearances this continues to grow.
The City has planned some major projects in this area so as to make it more accessible and Community Oriented. The Leger Transit Centre opened for service on April 26, 2009. This is to be a major hub for bus transportation in the Community and the South End in general. Young families and children should be comforted by extra efforts being made by the City to make access to buses safe and convenient. Additional Traffic signals at Leger Road and 23 Avenue have been activated, and work is underway on the pedestrian crossings into Terwillegar Towne.
The City of Edmonton is currently erecting an Arena Complex and a massive Recreation Centre Complex in Terwillegar Towne that are both scheduled to be completed in the Fall of 2010. Construction Contracts are soon to be reviewed and awarded for the Arena Complex. For the Recreational Centre, however, construction is already well under way. There are many efforts being made by current residents to make this a tight nit community. One such effort is an on-line Newsletter called ‘Terwillegar Towne Neighbours’ (http://www.terwillegartowneneighbours.com/index.php). Even though it appears to be in the grass roots stage, it shows potential to be somewhat of an on-line message board for neighbours hoping to feel more connected to their surroundings. It also serves as a great tool for local resources, including important contacts and phone numbers.
Residents benefit from new and well designed shopping centres. The two most notable ones are Riverbend A-1 Shopping Centre on 5645 Riverbend Road and Riverbend Square on Rabbit Hill Road and Whitemud Drive.
Wven though this is a relatively new neighbourhood, most of the residents and land developers share in the desire to make this a community bursting with classic charm. Part of this vision includes, tree lined streets, wide sidewalks, well lit neighbourhoods and a variety of architectural living options. Terwillegar Towne is now home to Edmonton’s next generation of successful, community oriented and environmentally conscious young families.
