St Patrick's Day is just around the corner, and there will be a variety of fun community events to celebrate this Irish holiday. Edmonton has developed a tight-knit community of Irish expatriates and immigrants, dating all the way back to the 1950s and the creation of the Edmonton Irish Sports & Social Society. Whether you're an Irish expat looking for a slice of home or a native Edmontonian eager to celebrate, you're sure to find some fun activities in Edmonton this March 17. Here's a quick sampling of the great community events that will be happening.

Promote Local Fitness With the Running Room’s St. Patrick's Day Run

On Sunday, March 16, The Running Room on 109 Street will be hosting its St. Patrick's Day Run. There will be a 10K walk starting at 9:30 AM, a 10K run starting at 10 AM and a 5K walk-run starting at 10:15 AM. Participants can register and pick up their running kits at the 109 Street Running Room on March 13 or 14 between 4 PM and 8 PM, or on March 15 between 10 AM and 5 PM. Participants may register as individuals or in groups. There will be a bag check available at the Shaw Conference Centre, Hall D. The course runs from Louise McKinney Park along the river valley and then back to the Shaw Conference Centre. The entry fee is $45 for those who register before March 10, or $50 on the day of the race. Every runner will be given a free breakfast after the race, and additional breakfasts can be ordered for $19.05 apiece. All registration fees and profits from breakfast ticket sales will go to support the Youth Empowerment Support Services and the City of Edmonton Parks department. Come promote Irish culture, health and fitness, and some great local organizations!

If you're looking for a St. Patrick's Day event that you can enjoy with your children, the Fairy Festival is a great opportunity to teach your kids about Irish culture and lore. Bring your children and let them learn about leprechauns, see a garter snake up close, and go on a St. Patrick's Day themed scavenger hunt. This family friendly event will take place from 11 AM to 3 PM on March 16 at the John Janzen Nature Centre, which you can find at 7000 143 Street. Admission is $6.50 per person or $13 for a family of four or more. Parents and guardians who are accompanying children get free admission.

Join a St Paddy's Day Pubcrawl and Celebrate Ireland in True Canadian Style

If your idea of celebrating St. Patrick's Day includes ordering green beer at as many different bars as possible, then the Canada Crawls St. Paddy's Pub Crawl is the celebration for you. By participating in this pub crawl, you'll get to skip the lines and avoid paying cover at some of the hottest bars in town. You can choose from 6 different party routes, that visit bars such as The Ranch, SET, The Pint, and MX. The pub crawl starts at various locations 7 PM on March 15. This is an 18+ event—be prepared to get carded at each venue.
