Edmonton is a creative city full of great local talent. Society's artists are said to be the dreamers, the rebels, and the people who point the way. Art Fuse, advertised as "an explosion of local word, image, and sound," is a weekly arts event in Edmonton that welcomes artists of all stripes to come and share their gifts. Here's what you need to know about Art Fuse if you're looking to break into Edmonton's arts scene.
The Vital Details: When and Where to Find Art Fuse
Art Fuse isn't just about art in performance. It's also about being in an environment that promotes creativity. Art Fuse is held in the café and lounge area of the Art Stream Centre at 11434-120 Street Northwest. PageMaster Publishing Services sponsors the event. PageMaster has been in business since 1996, providing Edmonton artists, authors, and businesses with effective publishing solutions. You can experience the great live music and meet with authors and artists every Thursday night. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the show runs from 7 to 9.
The Genres and Mediums: Types of Art You'll Find Here
Art Fuse celebrates art in all its forms, with a focus on the poetic, visual, and musical arts. Local Edmonton creative professionals take to the stage to share their spoken word, songs, poetry, books, short plays, and more. Art Fuse loves the variety its performers bring, and strives to promote interdisciplinary cooperation among artists. That's what makes every show great—you never know what to expect.
The People: Notable Performers and Artists From Past Events
Art Fuse has welcomed a number of talented people to its stage in the past. Notable guests include writer Warren Hathaway and artist Lori Youngman. Hathaway is the author of Pursuit of a Dream, a genre-defying book about Vera Strodl Dowling. Dowling is a Canadian icon and famous aviator who received her pilot's license in 1937. During World War Two, she worked as a delivery pilot, flying new bombers and fighter planes to the front lines and then flying back to the Air Transport Auxiliary in aircraft that needed to be repaired. Hathaway's book recounts the most exciting and memorable moments of Dowling's aviation career and tells a story of faith, courage, and the value of following your dreams.
Lori Anne Youngman is an Edmonton based painter who creates painted silk scarves. She markets her colourful designs as wearable art. Her artistic aim is to promote a life philosophy where art sparks conversations and creates change. At a recent Art Fuse event, Lori explained her artistic process in a moving presentation that captivated the audience.
