Summer is a season for all sorts of outdoor events. This year, plenty of such events are taking place across the Edmonton area in the form of 10K and marathon races. If you're a runner in the city looking to put yourself to the test, you may want to look into some of the different races that are coming up. Here are just a few that you won't want to miss.

Challenge and Fun Competing in the Leading Edge RunWild Marathon

Taking place this May 4 in St. Albert, just outside of Edmonton, is the fourth Leading Edge RunWild Marathon; it promises to be as competitive and enjoyable as ever for all participants. About 2000 runners are expected to hit the pavement in St. Albert this time around to participate in the event's full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, and kids' run. Registration is still open for anyone interested and will remain so up until April 30. The marathon and 10K have a runner's fee of $85 and $45, respectively. All the money raised by the event will be going to the Zebra Child Protection Centre (a centre dedicated to caring for abused children) and the St. Albert 50+ Club (a recreational hub for local seniors).

Lace Up for a Great Cause During Global City Edmonton Run for Water

Another road race to consider, this time occurring right in the heart of downtown Edmonton, is the Global City Edmonton Run for Water on May 5. This is a race event that includes a 1K, 5K, and 10K, along with live music, games for kids, and plenty of delicious food. Registration remains open until May 3, but runners looking to compete in the 10K who register before March 29 can get into the event for $40, whereas runners registering after that will pay $50. The best part about this particular race is that the money raised goes toward supporting Hope International Development agency, which is a group that works to bring clean and sustainable supplies of drinking water to impoverished families and communities all over the planet.

Scenic Competition With the Moose Is Loose Marathon

The annual Moose Is Loose Marathon will be taking place July 20 at Emily Murphy Park, with the main race routes taking runners along scenic trails that cut through the beautiful Edmonton River Valley. It includes both a half marathon and 10K for runners to participate in. Both will be getting underway early in the morning and will be followed by a delicious lunch consisting of hot dogs and fresh vegetables. Online registration will remain active until July 18 for those interested. After that, you can register in person at the Running Room store on 109 Street. Fees for both the half marathon and 10K are $50 until March 31, $60 until July 6, and $70 until July 18.

The warmer weather means that race season is almost underway. If you're a runner looking for some competition this year in Edmonton, there are plenty of opportunities for you across the city. The main events to look out for include the Leading Edge RunWild Marathon, Global City Edmonton Run for Water, and the Moose Is Loose Marathon.
