Sailing is an amazing way to enjoy the great outdoors during the warm summer months in Canada. Many people do not even realize that they can go sailing in Edmonton, but in fact there are several opportunities to get involved in sailing at a number of different levels. From simple learn to sail opportunities to racing a cruiser, the lakes around Edmonton are home to vibrant sailing communities that welcome newcomers with open arms. Learn a new skill or get plugged in to an awesome community this year at some of these great Edmonton sailing clubs.
Edmonton Yacht Club Has it All
Located on the shores of Lake Wabamun on Seba Beach, the Edmonton Yacht Club is the area's most developed sailing club, offering opportunities to sail both dinghies and larger cruising yachts. The two-story clubhouse has hosted many a thriving party through the years at their upstairs bar (which is complete with a piano, if you feel like stopping by and playing a tune for the crowd). Members of the club are able to rent one of the small cabins on the property and moor their yachts on the floating dock. In the summer, the Northern Alberta Sailing College teaches people of all ages and abilities how to sail small two-person dinghies. The club also has a bustling racing schedule for those interested in getting competitive.
Strictly Dinghy Sailing at Wabamun Sailing Club
On the opposite end of the lake from E.Y.C. is another club - the Wabamun Sailing Club. This club is specifically for those who are sailing dinghies, so you won't find any yachts here. One of the hallmarks of W.S.C. is the popular dinghy races and regattas they host every week. They have a strong community of families and individuals who love sailing and racing together. Members are welcome to use the clubhouse, as well as obtain a trailer spot behind the clubhouse to park a trailer. The Northern Alberta Sailing College also offers lessons out of this location during the summer months.
A Unique Yacht Racing Opportunity at the Sunshine Bay Yacht Club
Situated in the middle of Sunshine Bay is this niche yacht club exclusively reserved for those who enjoy racing the big boats. Along with the Edmonton Yacht Club, these folks host a summer racing series for cruisers that takes place on the weekends. Members are welcome to use their facilities and moor their boats in the bay or on the dock.
Although sailing might not be your go-to recreational activity in a prairie city, there is indeed plenty of sailing to be done in the Edmonton region. Each club in the area offers something unique to members and guests, and provides a chance to learn an age-old skill. Whether you're interested in becoming a competitive racer or just want to try something new, one of these great clubs will serve as a perfect introduction to sailing in Edmonton.Posted by Sarah MacDonald on
