During the summertime, there is no better way to escape Edmonton's soaring temperatures than by taking a dunk in one of the city's outdoor pools. Not only can you soak up the sunshine, you can refresh your body at the same time. While outdoor pools are a great luxury during the hot months, they require much more maintenance than many homeowners want to commit to during fall and winter. This is why many Edmonton residents will frequent outdoor pools in the area rather than purchasing a property with a pool. If you are looking for the perfect place to take a dip, here are three of the best around.

The Modern Fred Broadstock Pool

Located in West Edmonton on 105 Avenue, the Fred Broadstock Outdoor Pool is a modern day favourite. This family-friendly pool was renovated just four years ago, and has a variety of amenities that you would expect to find in a nice neighbourhood. Measuring 25 metres with depths ranging from 1 to 3.8 metres, this six-lane pool is perfect for the whole family. If you have children there is also a child- friendly spray park. For the non-swimmers of the family, there is a dry-land basketball court and sun deck for soaking up the sun.

Oliver Outdoor Pool for Residents Downtown

If you are an urban resident of Edmonton or you frequent the downtown area, Oliver Outdoor Pool is conveniently located on 119th Street. This 30.5 metre swimming pool comes complete with giant inflatables for adults and children to enjoy and a deep water slide that will keep you entertained for hours. This location attracts residents of all ages, making it a wonderful option for families. In case you want to get out of the water and work on your tan there is a sun deck and if you're packing the kids along you'll enjoy the playground and picnic area.

The New Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool

Located on 9100 Walterdale Hill, the new 25 metre Queen Elizabeth Outdoor Pool is a great venue to visit to take a dip and to enjoy other surrounding attractions such as the spray park or the sports centre. Open between the hours of 11 am and 7 pm when weather allows, this pool has two diving boards, zero depth entry areas, and a sun deck for relaxation. With river valley trails, private picnic areas, playgrounds, spray park amenities and sports fields all within walking distance of the pool, you can make this a day trip and catch up on some much needed relaxation time.

Each of these public pools have special sunning areas where you can lay back, read a book and enjoy what summer has to offer in Edmonton. Be sure to get there early, pack a picnic lunch and don't forget the sunscreen!
