South West Edmonton

Aspen Gardens, Edmonton

Aspen Gardens was designed and built in the 1960s and 70s as an escape for the many Edmonton residents who loved the city but needed someplace quiet to get away and required larger than average sized lots to build luxury estates on. Since many of the older neighbourhoods in the inner city of Edmonton have a dense population, there aren’t many opportunities to have a larger house or space between neighbours. Aspen Gardens solved this problem and became home for the affluent of the city.

The Schools of Aspen Gardens

Four schools, two inside the community and two more sharing a border with it, service Aspen Gardens’ families. In the southeast corner is Aspen Gardens Park, which is home to two schools in the public school system. Westbrook School is a K-6 public elementary that operates the Challenge program, which is tailored to help educate highly gifted children who require additional challenges. Vernon Barford School is a 7-9 junior high also operating the Challenge program as well as a Literacy program. Richard Second School is close by and runs French Immersion and Cogito programs for children in grades K-6. St. Boniface Catholic School is close by in the separate system and runs classes for K-6.

What to do in Aspen Gardens?

The community has never been very commercially focused; the very nature of why it was created didn't leave room for shops, which is part of its appeal. The large houses provide room for large trees to line the streets, and the community was built with pedestrian and cycling paths so that residents can make their way through town quietly and peacefully.

In the south, under Aspen Gardens Park, are the majority of services like Grub Med Greek Ristorante, the Westbrook Veterinary Clinic and a Senior Care Centre for residents with family members requiring constant supervision but still want them within walking distance. Aspen Gardens is serviced by the number 50 bus, which runs through the community via 40 Ave NW. The 43, 50 and 53 busses run down 119 St SW past Aspen Gardens.
