Bearspaw, Edmonton

This community, named for legendary Aboriginal figure Chief Masgwaahisd, is completely residential and it was built in the 1980s on a recreational site that included both Bearspaw Lake and the Blackmud Creek Ravine. As a result of the design almost all of the houses have wonderful views of the natural environment around and plenty of land. The community is bordered by Big Bear Park on the west side, Anthony Henday Dr on the south side and Gateway Blvd NW on the east side.

Bearspaw Shopping and Restaurants

The biggest amenity to the people of Bearspaw is the South Edmonton Common shopping centre and self-proclaimed entertainment hotspot, which would be Edmonton’s largest shopping district if it wasn’t for that other mall the city is known for. The list of major retailers in this complex is almost endless with Wal-Mart, Lowe’s, Future Shop, IKEA, The Real Canadian Superstore, Adidas, London Drugs, Mark’s and Michaels all providing services here alongside the entertainment provided by Chuck E. Cheese and Cineplex Odeon Cinemas. People who love to spend a night eating out will appreciate the long list of Bearspaw restaurants available in this area including Earls, Montana’s Cookhouse, Joey’s, Ricky’s All Day Grill, Hudsons, Harvey’s, and Boston Pizza. There are only two buses servicing the community, both the 40 and 46 travel through Bearspaw via 105 St and out through 109 St.

Where Are The Closest Schools?

Because Bearspaw is such a small community there are no schools inside its official borders, but there is still a really fine education system in place for the students of the neighbourhood. Keheewin School is a public elementary school with classes for Kindergarten to grade 6 in both the Regular and Interactions programs and it is located just blocks north of the community border. George P. Nicholson School is another public elementary with classes for grades Kindergarten to 6 and it is located just west of Bearspaw. The South Edmonton campus of the CDI College of Business Technology and Healthcare is also located one community over from Bearspaw, which is great for any current students or recent graduates who require a quiet neighbourhood to study.
