The area of Riverbend is bustling with many outdoor parklands where residents and visitors can explore and indulge in the beauty of Mother Nature. The largest park in the area is Rainbow Valley Park, which borders Riverbend on the east and spans a great distance running north to south. The park is home to Rainbow Valley Campground and Snow Valley Ski Club. Terwillegar Park is another large outdoor area situated at the meandering shoreline of the North Saskatchewan River. This area also is home to a fantastic community and sports complex.
This is a popular place for dog walking, cycling, and jogging. It also offers a canoe launch, hiking trails, and a large off-leash dog area. Other parks in the area include Fort Edmonton Park (a historic attraction and museum), Thomas Rhatigan Park, and Robert Carter Park.
Located roughly twenty minutes from Downtown Edmonton, Riverbend offers many different routes, making it easy to commute to and from the centre of Edmonton. University of Alberta's South Campus is located very close to Riverbend, just to the east of Brookside's boundaries, and is one of the most sought-after public research universities in the province. Elementary and junior high schools are found in the area as well, with high schools close by.
Riverbend Community League puts on many annual events that are celebrated within the community, including Riverbend Family Winter Festival with horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and many more activities for kids. Just north of Riverbend at William Hawrelak Park is the annual Servus Heritage Festival that takes place each year on the August long weekend. This is a festival that celebrates the diversity of cultures in Edmonton; there are musical and dance performances as well as food with an array of cultural origins.
