Several parks and playgrounds are found in Rio Terrace. These include Rio Park, which offers a playground for young residents of the neighborhood, and Rio Terrace Park which overlooks the North Saskatchewan River. Fort Edmonton Park is located nearby and is a popular tourist attraction. If you're a fan of golf, the Edmonton Country Club and Golf Course is located just to the southwest of Rio Terrace, and for those that prefer to bury their nose in a good book the Jasper Place Branch of the Edmonton Public Library is located about four minutes to the north on 156th Street.
Community Transportation
The 156th Street overpass offers access via car to the Rio Terrace neighborhood. Public transportation is provided to residents of the neighborhood by the Edmonton Transit System via routes that go through 156th Street and 76th Avenue/159th Street.
The Rio Terrace Elementary School is located on 154th Street in Rio Terrace. Other educational resources in the neighborhood include the Westend Community Playschool preschool and Patricia Heights Elementary School located to the west. For those who have older children, St. Rose Junior High is located about six minutes from Rio Terrace to the northeast, and Jasper Place High School and St. Francis Xavier High School are both located on 163rd Street.
Community Demographics
The population of Rio Terrace was about 1,300 in 2012, with the neighborhood's population dropping slightly between 2009 and 2012. Population density in Rio Terrace is at around 2,250 people per square kilometre, and there were about 510 homes in the neighborhood as of 2012. The average annual income of Rio Terrace residents is $121,000, which is fairly high in comparison to other neighbourhoods and communities in the Edmonton area. The vast majority of dwellings in the neighborhood are single family detached homes, with only about 20 out of 510 buildings housing renters. The municipal residential tax rate or in Edmonton for 2014 is 5.5383 percent.
The Rio Terrace Community League puts on a variety of community events and special programs each year. The city of Edmonton also hosts many festivals each year that residents of Rio Terrace real estate can enjoy. In fact, Edmonton has acquired the nickname "The Festival City" due to all of the large festivals that take place in the area. Especially noteworthy Edmonton festivals include The Works Art & Design Festival, the Edmonton International Street Performer's Festival, and the "K-Days" Festival.
