Avonmore was developed during the 1950s and features primarily single family homes. Avonmore is bounded by major roadways and Mill Creek Ravine. The area offers easy access to the North Saskatchewan River Valley park system and to nearby Bonnie Doon mall. A high proportion of area residents are over the age of 50. The only other neighbouring community is Argyll to the northwest.

There is only one school inside the official boundaries of Avonmore, but there are several more only blocks outside of the bordering streets. The main school servicing the students of Avonmore is Avonmore School, a public elementary and junior high mix with a wide variety of programming unique to this educational facility. Aside from standard curriculum courses available for Kindergarten through to grade 9 students, the school also has the Nellie McClung Girls’ Junior High and Waldorf courses available. Nellie McClung courses teach leadership and independence to female students with a goal towards high academic achievement and understanding women’s issues. Waldorf courses are designed to take advantage of the creativity that flows through a student’s imagination to help build communication and art skills. Schools just outside of Avonmore include WP Wagner School to the south, and St. James and Donnan School to the north.

The overwhelming majority of homes are single-family houses because the community was designed to be a residential one with limited commercial areas. 70% of households are reported to be English only houses and over 40% of people reported being either married or in common-law relationships.

Things to do in the Community

There are not many shops or services in Avonmore as the community was designed to be a quieter residential area, but this works out well for residents because the Bonnie Doon Centre is located just north of Avonmore. This massive shopping complex has enough shops, services and restaurants that residents don't need to go any further to get their shopping done. Aside from SEARS, Target and Safeway there is also an Albert's and Tony Roma's to go along with the Brits Fish &Chips and Garden Terrace found in Avonmore.

The Mill Creek Ravine Park has many walking and hiking paths as well as several multi-use sports fields for any recreational needs the residents may have, as well as the spray park and community league in Avonmore Park. The main traffic artery is along 83 St where the 8, 15, 60, 61, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 71 and 97 bus lines run through, bisecting the community and providing access to all other areas of Edmonton.
