It’s not surprising that The Silver Skate Festival is the longest running winter festival in the City of Edmonton. It’s a ton of fun! Get your mittens and toque and head to Hawrelak Park for a day full of winter activities. The festival runs until February 23rd, with a host of different events happening every day.

We went on Family Day and it was packed, although there was a bit of a line up to get into the park, there is plenty of free parking on site. There is also a $2 ETS shuttle from the U of A.

There is plenty to do at the festival, including skating, horse drawn sleigh rides, cross country skiing, show shoeing, and face painting, all of which are free! Our kids particularly enjoyed the snow maze, ice slide, and make your own cabane à sucre (a.k.a. maple syrup popsicles).

Luckily conditions are perfect for the festival this year - there's plenty of snow, it's cold enough for a good skating surface, but warm enough to enjoy a few hours outdoors. 60,000 people attended the festival last year, with the excellent conditions this year I bet they'll set new attendance records.

The snow sculptures are stunning, and I can only imagine what the fire sculptures look like lighting up the park at night. There is lots more to do at the Festival including taking in races, roving performers and musical acts. Full details at silverskatefestival.org.
