It’s not surprising that The Silver Skate Festival is the longest running winter festival in the City of Edmonton. It’s a ton of fun! Get your mittens and toque and head to Hawrelak Park for a day full of winter activities. The festival runs until February 23rd, with a host of different events happening every day.

We went on Family Day and it was packed, although there was a bit of a line up to get into the park, there is plenty of free parking on site. There is also a $2 ETS shuttle from the U of A.

There is plenty to do at the festival, including skating, horse drawn sleigh rides, cross country skiing, show shoeing, and face painting, all of which are free! Our kids particularly enjoyed the snow maze, ice slide, and make your own cabane à sucre…

The Provincial Government has announced three new schools will be built in Edmonton, opening in 2016. Residents in Lewis Estates, Ambleside and Summerside are excited to have new schools being built close to home. In addition, a major expansion to 5-year old Lillian Osborne High School in Terwillegar will make room for 600 new students. In all, the new schools will make room for 3,100 new students.

Lewis Estates is a neighbourhood in the far west end of Edmonton, west of the Anthony Henday and North of The Whitemud. Many families in the area have had to drive long distances to get their kids to schoo. The new junior high school in Lewis Estates will accomodate 900 students.
