The Provincial Government has announced three new schools will be built in Edmonton, opening in 2016. Residents in Lewis Estates, Ambleside and Summerside are excited to have new schools being built close to home. In addition, a major expansion to 5-year old Lillian Osborne High School in Terwillegar will make room for 600 new students. In all, the new schools will make room for 3,100 new students.

Lewis Estates is a neighbourhood in the far west end of Edmonton, west of the Anthony Henday and North of The Whitemud. Many families in the area have had to drive long distances to get their kids to schoo. The new junior high school in Lewis Estates will accomodate 900 students.

Ambleside is a neighbourhood in the Windermere area, south of the Anthony Henday. A new K-9 public school will accomodate 900 students in Ambleside.

Summerside is a community in south east Edmonton, south of Ellerslie Road and East of Gateway Bv. A new Catholic K-9 school will accomodate 750 students in Summerside.

Sarah Hoffman, chairwoman for the public school board, said the new schools in Lewis Farms and Ambleside will help alleviate some of the “incredible growth pressures” that have forced hundreds of students to be bused out of their communities daily.

“We’ve got kids in these areas who could fill them up today, so the faster we work through some of the logistics challenges, the faster we can get kids in these schools,” Hoffman said.

Of course, many people are concerned that the need is already greater than the plans allow, and by the start of the school year in 2016 the population will only be larger. Residents in Windermere have even signed a petition, asking for two schools in the area, so their wishes have been half granted.
